Trump fires head of election cybersecurity for contradicting Trump's bogus fraud claims

On Tuesday evening news broke that soon-to-be-former white supremacist in chief Donald Trump has fired Christopher Krebs, the director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. This move, while not surprising, is frightening because Krebs was in charge of our national election security and had disputed Trump’s continuously fact-free claims of voter fraud. Last week, Krebs oversaw the release of a statement that called the 2020 election “the most secure in American history.”

Trump himself announced the firing via his main fake-claims-about-election-fraud channel, Twitter, saying “The recent statement by Chris Krebs on the security of the 2020 Election was highly inaccurate, in that there were massive improprieties and fraud--including dead people voting, Poll Watchers not allowed into polling locations, ‘glitches’ in the voting machines which changed...” The idea that this is anything but an attempt to circumvent the fact that Trump’s voter fraud narrative has zero evidence to back it up, and he’s angry that no one wants to play pretend with him anymore, is laughable.

After the announcement, Krebs tweeted “Honored to serve. We did it right. Defend Today, Secure Tomrorow. #Protect2020.” Krebs has been lauded by conservatives like Sen. Rob Portman—not known for having much in the way of scruples when it comes to partisanship.

GOP Sen. Rob Portman, a member of Senate Homeland Security, defends the work of Chris Krebs after Trump fired the DHS official for asserting that the elections were secure and fair "I know Chris, I've worked well with him. I think he's a real professional," Portman told me.
