The election is almost over—and one reason I’m cautiously optimistic is the youth vote. Despite millions of students displaced from college campuses due to the coronavirus, the enthusiasm of voters under the age of 30 is reaching historic levels.
The problem: Will young voters know how to cast their ballots and vote by Tuesday?
Texting is one of the most popular get-out-the-vote activities at Daily Kos, and you can see why. You send messages to voters, ask for their plan to vote, and give them all the information they need to go vote. And for voters under the age of 30, this outreach is particularly effective.
But the downside is it's often too popular. A single volunteer can send out hundreds of text messages in one hour, so campaigns frequently run out of numbers to give out. When you sign up for a volunteer texting shift, you may find that other volunteers have grabbed them all.
Which is why it's important to sign up for a texting shift as quickly as possible and to go ahead and send out all your assigned text messages. If a shift is full, you may have to check back again. But know that this work is incredibly effective and needed more than ever in the final four days.
And if you still can't get a texting shift, please sign up for a phonebanking shift with NextGen. That's where they need the most volunteers, and if you are nervous about phonebanking please read this great piece by one of our Daily Kos community members.
A Harvard Institute of Politics poll showed that enthusiasm for voting in 2020 among young people (ages 18-29) is on par with 2008 when Obama was elected, and that Joe Biden beats Trump among these voters 63-25%. Our job in the final hours of this election is to reach as many of these young voters as we can, and make sure they have cast their ballots.
Keep calm and get out the vote!
